Garages, car dealerships, dealer groups

What your cameras really see.

A garage quickly ends up with ten cameras, and none of them has ever been checked technically. I measure every system on site, set it up correctly and document the result. For single businesses and for groups with many sites.

Each building block is a self-contained service with a clear scope and a fixed price. Technical and professional advice with standardised reports that your data protection office and your lawyers can work with directly.

Inventory

All cameras at one site against the audit checklist: optics and coverage area, recording, access, network, signs. For each camera a photo, measurement, traffic-light rating and measure for your installer, then verification image. For dealer groups as a camera audit across all sites, with traffic-light overview and audit checklist for your internal audit.

Documentation

Camera register per site and site plan with the measured coverage area: the facts your data protection office lacks for its register and policy. Plus templates for the notice sign and the staff information. For new systems I review the plan before the order and sign off the installation.

Audit checklist

The technical audit checklist.

Five areas, fixed checkpoints, one result per checkpoint with a photo or screenshot. The same checklist at every site. So businesses are comparable, and your internal audit can repeat the review.

Optics and coverage area

Focal length, angle, tilt and height of every camera. Coverage area measured and drawn on the cadastral map. Pixel density at the important points: identification from 250 px/m, recognition from 125 px/m. Night vision checked, verification image by day, night image from the recording.

Recording

Retention period and overwriting on the recorder. Timestamp and time server. Export for police and insurer with checksum. Backup after an incident.

Access

User accounts on the recorder and in the app. Default passwords, shared accounts, accounts of former employees and of the installer. Log of playbacks.

Network and cloud

Visual check without intervening in the network: which network are the cameras and recorder on? Remote access, the manufacturer’s cloud and server location, firmware, factory passwords. The findings go to your IT.

Signage and documentation

Notice signs before the coverage area. Camera register with position, type, lens and viewing direction. Site plan. Staff information. Entry for the register of processing activities.

The installer is paid for sharp images. Not for what must not be in the image.

Why

Three situations where the evidence counts.

Cameras run quietly for years. It gets laborious when someone asks what they see and nobody can show it. With report, plan and camera register you have the answer before the question comes.

The question after a dismissal

The person concerned asks through a lawyer or the union what the camera above the lifts records. With the evidence, the plan shows that it covers gates and vehicles, not the workplaces; register and staff information are attached. The answer is a letter with attachments.

Theft and vandalism on the used-car lot

Cars disappear or get scratched at night, and the camera has recorded it. The police and the insurer first examine the footage itself: night image, timestamp, export, and whether the pavement and the street run along. With the evidence you know beforehand whether a face and a number plate are identifiable at night; the clock is right, the export carries a checksum, and the image ends at the boundary, so you can hand the footage on without editing.

The question from next door

Someone next door wants to know whether the camera shows their driveway. A customer asks whether they are filmed while parking. The site plan and the verification image show where the image ends; the same applies when an authority asks.

Self-check: where do you stand today? 14 questions, two minutes

Typical findings

What I almost always find.

None of these gaps arises from ill will: the installer is paid for sharp images, and afterwards nobody looks again. Almost everything can be solved by adjustment, not by new equipment.

Schematic plan of a garage. Before: the entrance camera K1 captures the pavement and the street, the workshop camera K2 the house on the neighbouring parcel. After: by turning, tilting and a longer lens, both images end before the property line. In the report the plan is on the official cadastral map.

Workshop and service reception in view

Workplaces within the “identification” range all day long; measure: alignment towards gates, stores and parking spaces, longer lens, recording outside working hours.

Street and neighbours in view

Entrance camera with the pavement and the opposite lane, showroom camera at night with the balcony opposite; measure: choose tilt and lens so that the image ends on the ground before the boundary.

Recorder on factory settings

90 days of retention, timestamp without synchronisation, export as a phone video; measure: justified retention period, time server, export path with checksum.

App access for everyone

One shared password for sales staff, the installer and former employees, no log; measure: personal accounts with roles, log, revocation on leaving.

Camera on the guest Wi-Fi

Cameras on the customer Wi-Fi network, factory password, old firmware, remote access via a cloud abroad; measure: separate network segment, passwords, firmware, as notes for your IT.

Signs and register missing

No signs, or behind the door, no camera register; measure: signs before the coverage area, register and plan per site.

Process

From site visit to standard.

Three steps, one point of contact. Manufacturer-neutral: I measure and advise, equipment and installation stay with your installer. The legal assessment stays with your lawyers.

  1. Initial consultation

30 minutes, free of charge: sites, reason, responsibilities, deadlines.

  2. Site visit per site

As a rule half a day, scheduled around sales and the workshop. For groups, we plan the dates with you. The delivery date for the report is set in the quotation.

  3. Report, traffic light, implementation

Measures per site, traffic-light overview of the group. The recorder settings we set up together on the day of the site visit; alignment and lens are handled by your installer, then verification image and confirmation. Audit checklist for repeat audits in-house.

The overview for management and internal audit: one result per audit area for each site. Behind it, for each site, the report with photos, plan and measures. Sites and results are fictitious.

What you hold in your hands.

A report per site that the site manager understands and the installer can work through: short, instead of 80 pages. An overview that shows management on one page where the group stands. And a system that runs differently the next day: an export that works, a clock that is right, access that is regulated, an image that ends at the boundary. All documents as editable templates that belong to you; the annual check and the image check subscription are open to you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Short answers. Everything else we clarify in the initial consultation.

We have a group data protection office and our own lawyers. Why you as well?

The data protection office writes the policy, the lawyers assess, the site implements. In between nobody measures what is actually mounted and what it sees. That measurement is exactly what I deliver, manufacturer-neutral, against a fixed checklist and comparable across all sites; for your internal audit an audit point that can be repeated.

Does the workshop camera point at the staff?

That can only be answered on site, measured by day and by night: which workplaces are in the image and how identifiable. I also show how alignment, tilt or a longer lens limit the view to gates, vehicles and stores. Whether the system is permissible as it stands is for your lawyers to decide.

Our installer set up our cameras. Isn’t that enough?

The installer provides a sharp image and a running recording. Where the image ends, how long is stored, who is watching via the app and which network the camera sits on is not his job. That is exactly what I check; he then implements the adjustments, and I confirm with a verification image.

After a break-in: is our footage any use as evidence, and may we pass it on?

The police and the insurer need the footage quickly and in usable form: saved before the recorder overwrites it, with a correct timestamp, exported with a checksum, with enough pixels for a face or a number plate. I check exactly that beforehand on the night image. For television or social media: if the footage shows the pavement, neighbours, customers or staff, you publish uninvolved people along with it; whether and how that is possible is for your lawyers to clarify. I set the system up so that, when it matters, only your premises are on it.

What does it cost for a dealer group?

Camera audit CHF 1,700 per site for up to 8 cameras, each further camera CHF 140. Traffic-light overview, audit checklist and target values once CHF 2,900; the pilot with three sites therefore costs CHF 8,000. From twenty sites, a framework quotation with a tour plan. All prices are listed in the price table above.

What is the image check subscription?

Four times a year I check whether your cameras still see correctly: you upload a day and a night image per camera from the recording, I compare them with my measurement and send you a traffic-light report. No remote access. CHF 480 per year for up to 8 cameras, with the annual check CHF 360; it requires a camera review first.
